There’s a date looming large for Microsoft 365 administrators: October 1. That’s the date Microsoft cuts off Basic Authentication for Application Integration and will require that your 365 environment run Modern Application Authentication.
For iland and 11:11 Systems customers and partners who have Microsoft 365 backup, this is especially important. Why? Because all of your backup jobs will begin to fail if you have not updated to Modern Authentication by that October 1 cutoff date.
This may not be the first helpful or intelligible thing anyone has said to you all day, but don’t panic! Jim Jones, Veeam Vanguard and Senior Product Infrastructure Architect at iland, has given this a lot of thought over the last few months. He’s already written up step-by-step instructions on how to Enable Modern Authentication on his personal blog and shared why it’s really, really important. He’s also putting together a webinar presentation with Veeam Product Strategy Technologist Karinne Besette which will highlight this and other changes that could affect your Microsoft 365 environment.
“Updating to Modern Auth is relatively easy,” says Jones, “And this is an important step in improving security for Microsoft 365. It also has the benefit of giving you a robust way to let Veeam organization configuration interact with your Microsoft 365 environment.”
iland and 11:11 Systems recently added support for Modern Authentication. Moving forward, you’ll need Modern Auth to perform admin tasks and keep backup jobs running. We’re urging all of our customers and partners who are running 365 to update as soon as possible so you can avoid any problems.
“This will give you an additional level of security if you need to perform restores of your M365 backup jobs,” adds Jones. “Restores will require not only a user with administrative rights, but you’ll also need to have multi-factor authentication enabled for your environment as well.”
We’ve put together some resources on Success Center to make sure that life, the universe, and everything with your upgrade goes smoothly. If you have any questions, you can also reach out to us for help.
