The tech industry has made strides to be more inclusive, but there’s still room for improvement.
According to a World Bank report, women comprise less than one-third of the global tech workforce.
At 11:11 Systems, we actively seek to elevate more women into leadership positions. We recognize the fresh perspective that comes from diverse voices at the executive table. As part of our ongoing series highlighting accomplished women at 11:11 Systems, we spoke with Shawn Nelson, VP of Product Management.
How did you first get into tech, and what sparked your interest in product management specifically?
I started studying computer science in college but switched to management information systems. I then went to graduate school and got my MBA.
Early on, I found that I really excelled at product management. I’ve now worked in various segments like telecommunications, energy, and IT. I love the mix of collaboration, strategy, and seeing solutions launched.
What are some keys to your success that helped you reach the VP level?
I’d say relationships, accountability, and execution. Regardless of my role, I had to prove myself in these areas.
As a leader, I aim to foster inclusion, connect personally, and tackle obstacles head-on. I also believe in empowering my team and always following through. When you do what you say, you earn respect among your colleagues.
Why is it important to have women in leadership positions in the field?
Women bring a level of organization, structure, and an ability to drive collaboration among teams and organizations. It’s important to have different perspectives represented and acknowledged at the top.
What is your best leadership advice?
Focus on genuinely connecting with all stakeholders and explaining the “why” behind your discussions. This will make bringing people together and aligning them with the same goals easier.
However, be prepared to meet negativity head-on while leading by example with integrity. This can be tricky, but you’ll be glad you did it. Finally, give your teams room to shine — trust and accountability are essential.
At 11:11 Systems, we actively cultivate inclusion from the top down and value the perspectives of every individual.
