2022 Data Protection

Remember 2020? How we all hoped 2021 would be a better year? So much for that! As we move toward 2022 we realize that “hope” is not a strategy and that a whole new disaster recovery plan is needed.

The assumptions that were made yesterday no longer apply today.  Organizations have pivoted from traditional issues and are now focused on working with a mobile workforce, protecting against ransomware threats, staffing for missing key employees all while defining other options for the New Year.

The COVID-19 outbreak has globally changed the dynamics of business operations, and while it has shed some light on weaknesses in business models across sectors, it has also offered opportunities to move to DRaaS, as the adoption of cloud has increased in lockdown.

Amidst lockdown, many companies are reducing IT spending in 2021 and beyond. There is new focus on strategically reconsidering Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) spending. To achieve these strategies and avoid capital spending in these difficult financial times, organizations are moving to private and public cloud for BaaS and DRaaS.

 

Why BaaS and DRaaS?

Backup as a Service (BaaS) stores and secures your data files whereas Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) stores and secures your entire server: operating system, applications and configuration as well as data.  The difference becomes apparent if you have to recover after a total system failure.

BaaS will give you back your vital data. This will let you restart your business but only after you have procured and configured new servers and their associated operating systems and applications. All your user settings may also need to be recreated. Your business will recover but it will be hard work. Your IT staff will be busy for weeks. Your general staff will operate below their usual levels of productivity until systems are back up and running as they did before the disaster event.

DRaaS, on the other hand, will restore your servers, your applications, your user configurations and your data in hours or even minutes. Even if your physical server is destroyed, the server image can be restored to a different virtual machine (VM). Your business can be up and running again so fast that very few people would realize the level of the IT failure.
